Abstract Portraits 2022

“Beauty in the Brokenness - Cubism.”

Abstract Portraits is a 4 month online art course that will help you to discover the meaning in your artwork. This course will guide you in creating the concept of portraiture and the human form while avoiding a representational approach to reality.

Abstract Theme for 2022

Cubism with a focus on synthetic cubism.

(This year’s content will be different from Abstract Portraits 2021.)

Artist: Pablo Picasso - The Weeping Woman.

What is synthetic cubism?

In Analytical Cubism, the subject is broken down into flattened planes and sharp angles. In Synthetic Cubism, the subject is reduced to simple shapes that are built upon each other. Synthetic Cubism wasn't limited to painting but also included collage. Throughout history, cubism was known as an avant-garde art form that revolutionized the production and the perception of painting and sculpture.

Abstract Portraits 2022, will focus on the pieces (cubes) of cubism and how they depict a beauty of brokenness in us.

What will you learn:

  • How to create in a cubism abstract style, by combining a human face or figure with real and unrealistic objects that create a distorted reality.

  • History of cubism art and how it relates to the most influential art movement of the 20th century.

  • How to build your creative confidence using color and visual sensations as you tap into unreal imagery.

Course Objective:

  • At the end of this course, you will be able to create in confidence, discovering the courage and value to work beyond being a perfectionist.

  • You will learn how to create a portrait and human form adding the impact of color and shapes that contain non-naturalistic imagery, the purest form of abstract.

  • You’ll learn how to keep everything on a two dimensional flat plane, becoming a rebel in your creations, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective and foreshortening.

  • Your art in this course will develop into radical and fragmented imagery.

  • You will create art that questions what is reality and what is illusion.

  • Your abstraction will focus on synthetic cubism, which includes more color, decorative shapes, and collage textures, as well as the contrast between smooth and rough surfaces.
