Abstract Portraits is a 4-month mini course, which will guide you in discovering the meaning in your artwork. This course includes detailed lessons in creating the concept of portraiture and the human form while avoiding a representational approach to reality.

Theme for 2021

This year we will be focusing on the style of Abstract Expressionism.

Course Objective:

  • At the end of this course you will have confidence in the freedom to find the meaning of your own art work.

  • You will learn how to create a portrait using gesture marks, shapes, forms, and colors.

  • You will learn the impact of color and how to use it in your art to involve and explore the basic human emotions.

  • You will be able to develop a subjective reality in your creations through memory and visual sensation. Tapping into the artistic desire of how does your art make us feel.

  • And you will confidently create a portrait/human form that does not accurately depict a visual reality but demonstrates the power of color.

What will you learn:

  • How to create abstract expressionism.

  • Create a distorted reality by combining a human face or figure with real and unrealistic objects.

  • The history of abstract art, how it affects our creative journeys, and how we can tap into the visual of unrealism to build confidence in our creative process.

  • How to create a dynamic avant garde artwork using color and shapes.

  • Adding collage and line work that creates direction and movement.

 
 
 

Meet Your Creative Team

Abstract Portraits consists of 4 creative team members who will guide you on the journey into the separation of what we know as a real form (or real reality). Each team member is an expert in their field of creation extensive instructions on how to create portraits and the human form in an abstract style.

Creating Abstract Tips:

Emma’s Tip: “Allow yourself to loosen up completely creatively. Let go of the need for tight detail!”

Christa’s Tip: “Creating abstract isn’t always about seeing - it’s about feeling too. It’s guiding the viewer beyond sight towards a whole new dimension.”

Sherry’s Tip: “Cool tools keep me in that playful, experimental mood that is the best place to be when you’re getting all wild and crazy down that rabbit hole.”

Pamela’s Tip: “Play! Start by using a material like recycled brown bag, cardboard, or paper that doesn’t feel precious.”
